3. Science
"The observation, identification,
description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of
phenomena."6
Conclusive evidence comes only from empirical
science, which is that which may be observed, tested and repeated.
Both creationists and evolutionists are able to observe, test and measure. For
example, the speed of light is approximately 186,000 miles per second. This can
be tested and verified scientifically. The problem arises when scientists
incorporate philosophy (such as materialism) and speculation and then draw
conclusions.
The foundation of evolution is materialism (or
naturalism); the idea that physical matter is the only reality and there is no
supernatural realm, no deity. Evolution is not a fact; it is profoundly
philosophical. The idea that "creation is religion while evolution is
science" or that "creation is by faith while evolution is from
evidence" is wrong. Both creationists and evolutionists utilize evidence
from empirical methods. Indeed, one of England’s foremost evolutionist
biologists, L. Harrison Matthews, stated,
"The fact of evolution is the backbone
of biology, and biology is thus in the peculiar position of being a science
founded on an unproved theory--is it then a science or a faith? Belief in
the theory of evolution is thus exactly parallel to belief in special
creation--both are concepts which believers know to be true but neither, up
to the present, has been capable of proof." 7
4. Microevolution
"Evolution resulting from a succession of
relatively small genetic variations that often cause the formation of new
subspecies."8
The formation of new subspecies does not conflict
with creation. The problem arises when "microevolution" is extended to
macroevolution.
When people speak of microevolution, they often
use it as evidence for evolution in general. For example, US News and World
Report, in a feature article by Thomas Hayden called, "A
Theory Evolves", states in large letters,
"By now scientists say evolution is no
longer ‘just a theory.’ It’s an everyday phenomenon, a fundamental
fact of biology as real as hunger and as unavoidable as death."9
This statement of evolution being "as real
as hunger and as unavoidable as death" is about adaptation, not
macroevolution. No one observed the evolution of fish to amphibians or how
reptiles (or dinosaurs) evolved the ability to fly! That’s confusing the
issue; therefore, to avoid such confusion, the word "adaptation" will
be used in regard to small changes.
5. Macroevolution
"Large-scale evolution occurring over
geologic time that results in the formation of new taxonomic groups."10
This is what evolutionists must prove, not
microevolution or adaptation, which we all agree occurs in nature. Confusion
reigns when biological adaptation is given as proof for macroevolution.
Therefore, macroevolution as presented in this book is the change "that
results in the formation of new taxonomic groups."
It Matters
This book was written because how one thinks
about evolution and creation affects how he or she views the world. The subject
of origins is foundational to our values, morality, politics, counseling,
education, and science. For example, a counselor who does not believe in God
will have a very different philosophy of human nature than the counselor who
does believe in God. The educator who does not believe in God believes there are
no absolute values. Depending on the educational subject, the teacher’s belief
in God can affect the textbooks which are chosen and the content of what is
being taught.
In the 20th century the acceptance of evolution
has dominated the world and has radically changed western culture. For a while
it seemed believers in God everywhere accepted some form of the theory of
evolution. In recent years, as the pictures from science are becoming more
clear, people from all walks of life are rethinking the issue of origins. This
book is written to help people rethink evolution and accept the personal God of
creation.
People are confused about the evolution and
creation issues. We attempt to clarify a few issues and provide solid evidence
that will convincingly show that particles-to-people evolution never happened. Evolution
Shot Full of Holes will point the way with a fresh, straightforward
perspective on this hotly debated topic.
